Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, Exhaustion, and Secondary Trauma: Promoting Emotional Experience Over Avoidance

Learn more about burnout with these materials from Ryan Lindsay’s presentation to CICM’s Field Advisory Board on May 1st, 2023.

Burnout, compassion fatigue, exhaustion, and secondary trauma- these are all potential outcomes working in the helping professions. Most of this is driven by policies and systems that underfund, under-resource, and under-value the worth of all people. Inequalities are sustained through oppressive systems, and the helping professionals charged with supporting those most in need rarely have access to the full spectrum of equitably distributed resources, both inside our organizations and in our communities. This resource centers on how to take care of each other as a community of helpers knowing that we are doing this work without being equipped with resources needed to fully realize our potential as a workforce of helpers.

Ryan Lindsay chairs, teaches, and advises students within the Mental Health concentration at the Brown School. His work focuses on elevating clinical practice, especially around suicide prevention, through the use of evidence-based policies and practices. He possesses clinical expertise in multiple evidence-based interventions targeting mental health experiences and contributes broadly to the dissemination and implementation of these practices.
